Vietnamese's altar for ancestors

Traditionally, each family has an altar for the ancestors located in the most beautiful and solemn place in the central room of the house. The top level of the altar holds the ancestral tablets, lineage records, and the portraits, photos, and statues of deceased grandparents and parents. Offerings are placed on the middle level, and lamps and incense bowls are on the lowest level. Following 27 months of the mourning, the ancestral tablet or the portrait of the deceased is moved from the secondary altar and installed on the altar of the ancestors.

Death destroys only the physical body, for the souls survive in the afterworld and have the capacity to intervene in the lives of the living. The deceased thus maintains relations with his or her family. Each individual invokes his ancestors at the altar, thus demonstraing his veneration and expressing his wishes. Ancestors are honoured on the anniversaries of their deaths, on each new year, and when there are happy or sad events in the household, all of which serve to strengthen family ties.
