The Muong in Hoa Binh

With a population of over 1,200,000 (2009 census), the Muong live mainly in Hoa Binh where the ancestral cen-ters of Bi, Vang, Thang, and Dong are located and also with other communities living in Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho and Son La.

The Muong intensively cultivate wet rice in the valleys between hills and high mountains. They also raise cattle and poultry, hunt, fish, gather foods from the forests, and practice handicrafts.

Villages are located at foothills, near a stream or river. The nha lang system of hereditary lords was the dominant social structure. Each governing family (Dinh, Quach, Bach, Hoang, ha, and others) had its own customary institutions to administer the Muong village in their territory.

The Muong have a rich folk literature with famous sto-ries such as Te tat te dac ("Birth of Land and Water"), as well as rhyming songs auch as xec bua (or sac bua) and hat vi. Other well-known folk traditions are the cotton-planting and wrestling dances.
