Cell E in the Hoa Lo prison

Cell E In Hoa Lo prison

This cell witnessed the draconian policies of the French against male political prisoners, attempting, little by little, to kill their will to fight. In 1930 and 1931, jailers of Hoa LoPrison adopted stringent regulations to prevent Vietnamese communist inmates from forming prisoner organisations and resisting. However, Vietnamese communists still found many ways to maintain their will to fight and build solidarity among prisoners and demand that jailers treat the political prisoners properly.

In the period of 1940-1945, political training courses were held right in the cell. Viet Minh Resolution, Programme and Regulations were popularized among the communists. They helped each other improve understandings of and knowledge in political theory. To have materials for revolutionary propaganda and study in the prison, the communists often crawled on the floor to compile. They hid these materials by chiseling the wall, pulling out the bricks and then restoring the orginal appearance to make sure that the meterials would not be detected despite the regular patrol of jailers.

From 1946 to 1954, Cell E of Camp 1 detained a group of prisoners who the French called prisoners of war (POW). The more the war spread, the bigger the number of prisoners retained. This made Camp 1 always a crowed place.

Despite the difficult prison life, constant challenges and the atrocious cunning enemy, Vietnamese patriots and Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers were not discouraged and still remained their will to fight, keep fighting until their last breath.
