1. The establishment of Ha Long Bay’s cave:
The basic characteristics of Ha Long bay over the past 1000 years is the expansie of the sea. The sea had overgrowth the land of the Bay, while strong erosion process made the Bay’s water became cleaner and coral grew. The erosion of seawater positively created deep crashes that added to the unique beauty of the Cascade.
Actually, the modern Ha Long Bay is the result of a long-term geological evolution with the synthesis of many events, of which the most prominent event is the formation of limestone which is thick over 1000m in the centuries Pécmi (340 - 240 million years ago), the formation of Ha Long Bay’s basin in the Neogene period (26-10 million years ago). The Cascade formed the most active limestone plain in the Pleixtocene Quaternary period (2 million to 11,000 years) and the sea advanced into the Holocene period.
Coming to Ha Long Bay, visitors not only come to visit a wonderful heritage of the World but also to a museum of precious geology which has been kept outside up to 300 million years. The caves are not only the creative castles of the nature but also the living proof of the erosion of sea level through the geological age.
2. The development of Ha Long Bay’caves:
The islands in Ha Long Bay have two forms: limestone islands and shale islands which are concentrated in two main areas, the southeast of Bai Tu Long Bay and the southwest of Ha Long Bay. Among 1,969 islands of Ha Long Bay, there are 1,921 stone islandshaving the height of more than 200m. This is the oldest image of geologic terrain dated from 250-280 million years ago, a result of the elevated and downhill movements from the continent to the low sea. The process of carving almost completely creates a unique Ha Long Bay with thousands of rocky islands in various shapes appearing in the sea.
Ha Long Bay is a beautiful picture with the rhythmic transition of the sea and the land. If you stand on the Dau Nguoi Cave, you can admire one spectacular image: the mountain rangesfrom Cam Pha to Cai Dam are looked like a giant dragon which is slowly flying down to the Bay, and Tuan Chau island likes a pearl in the mouth of this dragon. Besides the diversity of the islands, Ha Long is also become more attractive because of its color: on the blue background of sea water emerges the green color of forests.
Ha Long Bay has two types of caves: the young and the old. The process of formating the young cave’s system involves the partial relocation to fill in the ancient cave. The continuous erosion of seawater has created the oddly shapes of islands and column-shaped limestone islands as we see today. It can be said that the appearance of Ha Long Bay and the wealth of unique and famous geology and landforms nowadays are the results of the formation, development and transformation processes which have been lasted more than 500 years.
