Vietnam is a country that has a lot of beautiful spot. However, when referring to Hanoi, nobody does not know about the Sword Lake and Ngoc Son temple. Both of them are two scenes which are characterized by Hanoi’s culture, especially the Ngoc Son temple. Up to now, Ngoc Son temple has become a famous place for foreign visitors coming here to enjoy the beauty of Hanoi city.
1. A historical story about Ngoc Son temple:
Ngoc Son temple has a long history. If you Accroding to historical sources, in 1802-1813, at the beginning of the Nguyen dynasty, a Buddhist built this temple on Dao Ngoc island for worshipping Quan De (Quan Van Truong-a famous Chinese general in the Three Kingdoms period). But from 1041 to 1842, Dr. Vu Tong Phan and Nguyen Sieu, two mandarins of the Ly dynasty decided to restructure Ngoc Son temple in order to worship Van Xuong De Quan. When Vu Tong Phan died, Nguyen Sieu rebuilt the temple once again. Nguyen Sieu built a Pen temple, the Inkslab, The Huc Bridge and Ba Dinh town. In the main area of Ngoc Son temple, people worshipped three gods with full of respect: Literature’s god, Van Xuong and War’s god, Quan Vu De. In 1891, people worshipped one more god, Duc Thanh Tran (Tran Hung Dao)- a national hero of Vietnam.
2. Special tourist site of Ngoc Son temple:
Ngoc Son temple is an ancient temple. The temple’s gate consists of the main gate in the middle and two side gates. Passing the main gain, on the left is the Pen temple which is located on the Ngoc Boi mound. This temple is shaped as a brush with the top is set up towards to the sky and slightly lean to one side. On the torso of the temple, there are three embossed Kanji: “Ta Thien Thanh”. The InkSlab is put on the right.
Passing through another small gate, we come to The Huc Bridge. Because of its red colors, looking from afar, The Huc Bridge curves like a shrimp. The meaning of two words “The Huc” is that “To pick up the morning sunshine”. Connecting from the Sword Lake to Ngoc Son temple, this bridge is red, made of wood and also has mnay consecutive pillars.
Stepping through the The Huc Bridge, we stand in front of the main gate of the temple. The temple was built accroding to an ancient style which consists of three rooms. The first room was Bai Duong, the second room is used to worship Van Xuong- the Literature’s god and the third room is worshiping Tran Hung Dao and Quan Cong – the War’s god. The statues of three gods are placed in the temple and all of them are elaboratedmeticulously. In front of the Bai Duong, it is the Ba Dinh tower. From the Ba Dinh tower, visitors can see the Turtle Tower and enjoy the cool breezes of the lake.
Each exam season comes, a lot of Vietnamese parents come to Ngoc Son temple to pray for their children passing the exam and getting high scores. This is also the reason many people consider Ngoc Son temple as a good place to pray for the good luck in learing. For Vietnamese in general and Hanoian in particular, Ngoc Son temple is not only the historical site of Hanoi, but it also a suitable place for anyone who want to follow the direction of good things and the truly dogmas of life!
